KOLWEZI, DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO – Ivanhoe Mines (TSX: IVN; OTCQX: IVPAF) regrets to report that a fatal accident occurred at the Kamoa-Kakula Copper Project in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The accident occurred underground at the Kakula Mine when a contractor’s employee was hit in the leg by a loose rock while he was working at one of the mine’s working faces, which caused the employee to fall backwards, striking his head on a rock. Despite immediate first-aid assistance by his colleagues, he passed away at the accident scene.

As well as investigating the accident internally, the Kamoa-Kakula senior management team and the contractor’s management team are working with the DRC authorities to facilitate their investigation of the accident.

Ivanhoe Mines est une compagnie minière canadienne axée sur trois principaux projets en coentreprise d’Afrique australe : the development of major new, mechanized, underground mines at the Kamoa-Kakula copper discoveries in the Democratic Republic of Congo and at the Platreef palladium-rhodium-platinum-nickel-copper-gold discovery in South Africa; and the extensive redevelopment and upgrading of the historic Kipushi zinc-copper-germanium-silver mine, also in the Democratic Republic of Congo .

Kamoa-Kakula began producing copper concentrates in mai 2021 and, through phased expansions, is positioned to become one of the world's largest copper producers. Kamoa-Kakula et Kipushi seront alimentées par de l’énergie hydroélectrique propre et renouvelable, et seront parmi les émetteurs de gaz à effet de serre les plus faibles au monde par unité de métal produite. Ivanhoe Mines has pledged to achieve net-zero operational greenhouse gas emissions (Scope 1 and 2) at the Kamoa-Kakula Copper Mine when large-scale electric, hydrogen and hybrid underground mining equipment become commercially available. Ivanhoe also is exploring for new copper discoveries on its Western Foreland exploration licences in the Democratic Republic of Congo, near the Kamoa-Kakula Project.
